The Puck Ewes pose before the tournament last year in Vail.
CRAIG-
The Puck Ewes are ready. They
have logged the ice time, travel time, out-of-state tournament play,
hosted their own Mardi Gras, smelled the fresh fragrance of overcooked
hotel bacon, drank a Bud or two, mixed a Margarita, pulled out the
Poker cards, listened to a hockey bag dry out all night long,
traveled through snowstorms, been turned around in snowstorms, and
even sacrificed a green hat for the good of the team. All for this
one weekend to chase around a 6 oz, disc-shaped, frozen piece of
rubber to fight for the right to be named the 2009 Mountain Division Champion.
Quick history lesson. In 2005-2006, the
Ewes took down a tough Storm team 3-2 on Steamboat ice and won their
first ever title. The following season, 2006-2007, the Ewes did it
again in a 1-0 defeat against the Vail Twin Peaks on Aspen ice. Last
year, the Ewes fell just short of a shot at the championship game
when the Twin Peaks enacted a bit of revenge in their own 1-0 defeat
of the Ewes less than a minute into the game. 1st place
division leader Craig brought home 4th place last year as
the 4thplace division ranked Storm went on to beat the
Aspen Motherpuckers 2 in a shootout on Vail ice.
So far, the only name that doesn't play
into the Ewes first three games of the Mountain Division Tournament this year
is the Storm; they play in the other pool with the Divas, Ice Queens,
Fattys Fury . The Ewes are the last game Friday night with a 10:00 pm
matchup versus the Motherpuckers 2.
The
Match-Ups
Friday 10:00pm EPIR
The 9-4-1 Ewes against the 7-6-1 MP2
looks to be a good contest. Craig is 1-0-1 against Aspen during
league play. Despite being outshot 41-39, Craig has outscored Aspen
5-3. In the second game of the season, Craig dropped the second home
game of the season in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Puckers. In Aspen,
the Ewes won 3-0 with the shots darn-near even at 19-18 in favor of
Craig.
Saturday 12:00pm EPIR
The 3-11-0 Steamboat Edge have had a
rough season since before it began. Goaltender and friend
Kit Rice passed away, leaving the Edge scrambling for a goalie. They
found one in Tanya Ferguson (who got a 1-0 shutout against the Vail
Twin Peaks, despite being outshot 25-5) who had to be replaced by Tami Jenkins later
in the season due to injury. This year the Edge dispatched tough rival Storm
2-1, and also picked up a 3-2 win against Glenwood. The Ewes were
2-0-0 against the Edge this season, outshooting them 72-34 and
outscoring them 13-2. Lopsided numbers mean nothing, however, as the
Edge have proven to be a team to watch out for against tougher clubs.
Saturday 7:00pm EPIR
The 7-5-2 Vail Twin Peaks are a team
the Ewes have not beaten yet this season. The Twin Peaks tied the
Ewes on Moffat County ice 1-1 the first game of the season on
November 15th and are 0-1-1 against Vail this season. In
the second game at Dobson, the Ewes found themselves playing in a
very “off” game where everything went wrong from warm-ups to the
final buzzer. Vail won that game 3-1, breaking the Ewes' five-game
win streak. The Twin Peaks have outscored Craig 2-4 this season,
although the Ewes have the shot advantage by a count of 36-33. The
Ewes are hungry for a win against the Peaks and play this team
Saturday night at 7:00pm.
The Other Stuff
Participating
in the Super Skills Competition this weekend will be Annie Abdella
(Fastest Skater), who led the Mountain Division in penalty minutes,
Stephanie Beckett (Sharp Shooter) with 6 goals and 2 assists this
season, Jamie Eckroth (Break-Away Relay) who led the Mountain
Division in scoring and was also 4th in penalty minutes,
Shannon Young (Shoot-out Star), 10th in scoring with 13
points and 3rd in penalty minutes, and finally goalie
Kandice Torno, who had the best goals against average 1.41 and save
percentage .926%, out of total games played.
Other
team notables: Lani Cleverly was 5th in scoring with 16
points, Terri Jourgensen managed 11 points, and Charlene Abdella put
up 10 points. For full stats, please visit the stat link on the left
or

The
Ewes finished 2nd in points for in-division games, ended
up ranked as a 3rd seed, led the Mountain in scoring with
62 goals, led the Mountain in goals against with only 20, and led in
penalty minutes with 67. Craig is looking to having a strong showing
this weekend in Eagle.
